Objective/Description
Genomic medicine is revolutionizing patient care. Of all specialties, oncology has been most affected as next-generation sequencing of tumor specimens to find drug-targetable mutations has entered clinical practice. Treatment of lung cancer has been especially impacted by this new testing paradigm. As such, oncologists must be conversant with the fundamental aspects of clinical genomics. Using a case-based, interactive, small-group approach, faculty will review introductory principles related to genomic assays, interpretation of results and application to patient care. The workshop will also include practical hands-on instruction with the use of online genomic pathology tools. As such, participants should bring a tablet or laptop (preferred) if available to facilitate participation in this aspect of the course.

Each exercise consists of:

  • An instructor-delivered 15-30 minute PowerPoint lecture to relay content needed to undertake the team-based learning (TBL) activity.
  • A 45-60-minute activity consisting of teams of 3-6 participants working together to answer a series of clinically relevant questions including some necessitating the use of online genomic tools.
  • An instructor-delivered 15-30 minute PowerPoint lecture presenting answers to the questions and incorporating a discussion of team responses.

Facilitators/Speakers:

  • Ramaswamy Govindan MD: Director, Section of Medical Oncology, Washington University School of Medicine
  • Richard L. Haspel, MD, PhD, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA
  • Siddhartha Devarakonda, MD, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO, USA
  • Pedro L. Fernandez Ruiz, MD, PhD, Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Badalona, and Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain
